Uppsala Castle, 1649. Queen Christine, more masculine than her men of war, more erudite than her scholars, brings René Descartes to her kingdom to teach her the mechanism of the passions that inhabit the soul. Torn between the masculine and the feminine, between faith and knowledge, between her love for a woman and the State which demands an heir, she seeks the truth, her truth–despite the rapacity of the nobles, the ardour of the suitors, her mother's madness, and, above all, despite the outbursts of her own passions.

TORONTO BEACH CHORALE | MISSISSAUGA CHAMBER SINGERS
Mervin Fick, conductor

The late Jack Layton conceived Messiah for the City in the late 1990s. He felt music and art should be accessible to everyone. Tickets to this special concert are not sold but rather distributed by United Way and its partner agencies to Torontonians who wouldn’t normally have access to such an event.

Toronto Beach Chorale, in partnership with Knox Presbyterian Church, presents Messiah for the City on Saturday, December 21. The performance features players from the Toronto Symphony, professional soloists, and an 80 voice chorus combining The Toronto Beach Chorale and the Mississauga Chamber Singers.

ALZHEIMER'S STORIES

CHOR AMICA
Patrick Murray, conductor
Catherine Carew, mezzo-soprano
Bradley Christensen, baritone

Alzheimer’s Stories is a large work for soloists, chorus and large ensemble. In 2008, an anonymous member of the Susquehanna Valley Chorale made a donation to the chorale to help fund the commissioning of a musical work on the subject of Alzheimer’s disease.

Written by American composer Robert Cohen, in collaboration with 2012 Grammy Award winning opera librettist Herschel Garfein, this recent oratorio draws from real-life interviews to explore the experiences of those living with Alzheimer's dementia as well as their caregivers.

Medea is based on an ancient Greek myth, in which the title character helps Jason (Giasone), leader of the famous Argonauts, steal the Golden Fleece—only to be abandoned by him. While her betrayal makes Medea a victim, this operatic interpretation gives her the last word as she unleashes her rage with chilling violence against those who have wronged her.
