On July 1, 1916, Newfoundland became victim to one of the most devastating losses of the First World War. During the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel, at the beginning of the Somme Offensive, in just a matter of minutes, thousands of young men were ruthlessly mowed down while attempting to drive back German soldiers on the Western Front. "More than 800 Regiment soldiers clambered out of the trenches and ran towards enemy lines. Famously, just 68 were able to answer roll call the following day." (Julie Skinner, CBC News)
Ours, composed by John Estacio and playwright Robert Chafe, tells the story of Catholic priest Thomas Nangle and his roll in helping locate and bury those who died in Beaumont-Hamel.
