Dido and Aeneas is an opera in three acts, written by English composer Henry Purcell with the libretto by Nathum Tate. The work was composed no later than 1688 for Josias Prest's girls' school in London, where it was first performed in 1689. The story tells of Dido, the widowed queen of Carthage, who embarks on a love affair with the Trojan prince Aeneas. When he abandons her to found the new Troy, she embraces her one alternative to a life of regret and sorrow.
