L'incoronazione di Poppea (The Coronation of Poppaea) takes place in ancient Rome around AD 60. Written by Claudio Monteverdi, with a libretto by Giovanni Francesco Busenello, it was first performed at the Teatro Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice during the 1643 carnival season. The main characters include Nero, the Roman emperor; Poppea, his lover; Ottone, Poppea's fiancé; Drusilla, who is in love with Ottone; and Octavia, Nero's wife. The opera describes how Poppea, mistress of the Roman emperor Nero, is able to achieve her ambition and be crowned empress.
